Three marble arches, almost two thousand years old, standing at the edge of the old town. Hadrian’s Gate is one of the most photographed places in Antalya, and for good reason: it turns any photo into something timeless. Here’s what I’ve learned from many sessions there, so yours goes beautifully.
A little history
The gate was built by the Romans around 130 AD to honour Emperor Hadrian’s visit to the city. Its carved columns and deep arches have survived for centuries and today form the entrance to Kaleiçi, Antalya’s old town. The warm marble reflects light softly, which is exactly why it’s so flattering in photos.
The best time of day
- Early morning is my favourite. The gate is quiet, the light is soft and even, and you get the arches almost to yourselves.
- The hour before sunset gives warm, golden tones on the stone. It’s busier, but still beautiful.
- Midday is the hardest: harsh shadows and the most visitors. In summer it’s also very hot, so I usually suggest avoiding it.
What to wear
The stone is warm and neutral, so almost everything works, but some choices really shine:
- Light, elegant outfits (cream, white, beige, soft pastels) look effortless against the marble.
- Dark, solid colours (black, deep green, burgundy) give a dramatic, editorial look.
- Avoid big logos and busy prints: they compete with the architecture.
- For couples and families, coordinated colours work better than identical outfits.
- Comfortable shoes help: the paving around the gate is old and uneven.
How a session there feels
Don’t worry if you’ve never posed before. I’ll guide you through every moment: where to stand, how to move and when to just laugh. We use the arches as natural frames, the columns for close portraits and the railing for relaxed, leaning shots. Families with little ones are welcome too; the open space is easy for kids.
Combine it with Kaleiçi
The best part: the cobbled lanes of Kaleiçi begin right behind the arches. In the Advanced package (2 hours, up to 3 locations) we can start at the gate, wander through the old-town streets and finish above the harbour, three completely different backdrops in one session.
